Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

elekta 2As a leader in radiation therapy, the Cancer Center utilizes the newest technologies available.   Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), is just one of the technologies to treat a multitude of cancers, such as bone cancer, breast cancer, brain tumors, lung cancer, prostate cancer, spinal cord cancer, head and neck cancers, gynecological cancers, and gastrointestinal cancers. This advanced type of radiotherapy uses a linear accelerator, which is computer controlled, to deliver precise doses of radiation to tumors or specific areas within the tumors.  IMRT is combined with our imaging capabilities.  This allows for Image Guided Radiation Therapy, or IGRT, adding to the precision of therapy.  Treatments are delivered within millimeters of accuracy.

A primary benefit in utilizing this therapy is that it provides higher and more effective doses of radiation with fewer side effects.
